# Estimating animal weight with the weight calculator

Use a [Weight Calculator](https://creatures.com/tools/weight_calculators) when you need a practical estimate and cannot use a livestock scale. Choose the animal's species, take two careful tape measurements, and the result shows pounds and kilograms.

The calculators cover Highland cattle, cattle, sheep, goats, horses, ponies, donkeys, alpacas, llamas, and pigs.

## Take the measurements

Stand the animal squarely on level ground. Keep the tape snug without pulling it into the body.

1. Choose **Inches** or **Centimeters** under **Unit of Measurement**.
2. Measure **Heart Girth (C)** around the body just behind the front legs. For cattle, horses, and ponies, pass the tape over the withers.
3. Measure **Body Length (A-B)** using the guide for your species. For pigs, measure from between the ears to the base of the tail. For the other listed animals, measure from the point of the shoulder to the pin bone or point of the buttock.
4. Select **Calculate Weight**.

For Highland cattle, sheep, alpacas, llamas, and other animals with a heavy coat or fiber, compress the hair or fiber so the tape follows the body rather than the outer coat.

## Read the estimate

The result shows the estimated weight in pounds and kilograms, repeats the measurements, and shows the formula used for that species.

Cattle and Highland cattle results may also show a **Weight Tape Comparison**. That second number uses heart girth alone and is calibrated for average cattle proportions. A difference between the two estimates is a reason to recheck the measurements, not proof that one result is exact.

## Know the limit

This is an estimate, not a measured weight. Body condition, breed shape, coat, pregnancy, posture, and measurement accuracy can affect the result. Recheck both measurements if the number seems surprising.

Use a suitable scale when an exact weight affects medication, anesthesia, transport safety, feed planning, or another health decision. Ask a veterinarian for dosing or medical guidance.
