What sale events are

A sale event is a hosted sale that brings many sellers' animals together under one banner and timeframe, run by an organizer. Think of a themed online auction or a fixed-price group sale: instead of standalone listings scattered across the marketplace, animals are gathered into one event that buyers browse and bid in together.

Two kinds of event

An event is one of two types, and the type decides how its listings sell:

  • Auction (Bidding) event: every listing in it is an auction, and buyers bid. Best for competitive sales and high-demand animals.
  • Fixed Price event: every listing in it has a set price and a Buy button. Best for a straightforward group sale.

A listing can only join an event whose type matches it (an auction listing joins an auction event, a fixed-price listing joins a fixed-price event).

Who runs an event, and what they set

The organizer is the member or organization hosting the event. They create it and set the rules that apply to every listing in it:

  • A consignment fee: a percentage the organizer takes from each sale in the event, deducted from the seller's proceeds. This is how an organizer is compensated for hosting and promoting the event.
  • A buyer-fee policy: whether sellers choose for themselves to cover the buyer's fee, or all sellers must cover it. Covering the buyer fee is one of the Sale Incentives explained in Promo codes and Sale Incentives at checkout.
  • A reserve policy: whether auction listings in the event may use a hidden reserve, or no reserves are allowed.

Each of these is explained field by field in Creating a sale event.

Two roles: organizer and participating seller

It helps to separate the two ways you can be involved:

  • As an organizer: you create the event, set its rules, and approve the listings that apply. See Creating a sale event.
  • As a participating seller: you apply one of your listings into someone's event and, if approved, your animal sells under that event's rules. See Applying your listing to an event.

Why sell in an event

For a seller, an event puts your animal in front of a gathered, motivated audience and lets the organizer's promotion work for you, in exchange for the organizer's consignment fee on top of the normal Creatures fees. It is a trade: more reach and a built-in audience, for a share of the sale. Whether that is worth it depends on the event and the animal. A strong showing at a well-run event also earns you reviews that help your next sale; see How reviews and ratings work.
