Paying outside Creatures
Paying outside Creatures
Sometimes a seller suggests settling up off Creatures (cash, a direct bank transfer, or another app) to skip the fee. It is worth being honest about what that choice costs you, because the savings are small and the protection you give up is not.
What you lose by paying off-platform
Everything that protects you as a buyer on Creatures depends on paying through Creatures:
- No held funds. When you pay through Creatures, your money is held safely and released to the seller only when you confirm delivery. Pay off-platform and that protection is gone: your money is with the seller the instant you send it, before the animal is anywhere near you.
- No confirm-on-arrival leverage. On-platform, if the animal never ships or arrives not as described, the funds are still held while it is sorted out. Off-platform, you are relying entirely on the seller's goodwill with no recourse through Creatures.
- No support for the payment. Creatures can help with a purchase made on Creatures. A payment sent outside the platform is not one Creatures can see, hold, or assist with.
For the sake of saving the buyer fee, you trade away the entire reason to buy through a protected marketplace. For a real animal and real money, that is rarely a good trade. Keep the payment on Creatures and keep the protection.
The off-platform transfer facilitation fee
Creatures still lets a sale be recorded between two members even when payment happened elsewhere, because keeping the animal's ownership and history accurate matters. When a transfer is completed this way, there is a small off-platform transfer facilitation fee of $19.95.
- What it is: a flat fee for facilitating and recording a transfer whose payment was handled off Creatures. It keeps the ownership records, history, and accounting correct even though Creatures did not process the money.
- Who it applies to: it is charged to the seller completing the off-platform transfer, not added to your payment. It is waived for sellers on a Pro subscription, and a seller's first off-platform transfer is free.
- Why it exists, plainly: it reflects that even an off-platform sale uses Creatures to record the change of hands, while the much larger value (held funds, buyer protection, support) only comes with paying on the platform. For how this fee is calculated and when it applies, see How does the off-platform transfer fee work?.
The honest bottom line: paying on Creatures is what makes a purchase buyer-protected. Paying outside it saves a little and risks a lot. See How buying works for what you keep by paying through Creatures.
